Tornado!
A rash of tornados ripped through Oklahoma and the Midwest on Sunday and Monday, destroying homes and tossing trees around like toothpicks. As many as 28 tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa on Sunday and Monday, according to the National Weather Service, with Oklahoma and Kansas the hardest-hit.
Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency after tornadoes tore through 16 counties in her state Sunday. Twenty-three people were injured; she told CNN. One man was killed in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, where a twister reduced trailer park homes to piles of debris. The storm left highways littered with debris, smashed cars and flipped over semi trucks. An 18-wheeler blew off an overpass on Interstate 40 and was practically flattened. An estimated 300 homes were damaged or destroyed across the state.

Marathon Suspect #2 Caught!
As you already know, one of the Russian brother suspects was killed and one was caught during a shootout with police. On Friday, April 19th, the Boston police found Dzhorhar Tsarnaev hiding in a boat. The officers checked him for explosives and then took him into custody. The Boston Police Department got the last word on Twitter by tweeting, "CAPTURED! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody." Shortly after, they tweeted, "In our time of rejoicing, let us not forget the families of Martin Richard, Lingzi Ly, Krystle Campbell and Officer Sean Collier." And I completly agree.

We MigHT nOT have to live on Earth Anymore! ...?
Scientists announced on Thursday the 18th that three earth-like planets were discovered outside our own solar system: Kepler-62e, Kepler-62f and quite possibly Kepler-69c. These planets are the smallest ones ever found in the "habitable zone," the area near a star where a planet could possibly hold liquids. "With all of these discoveries we're finding, Earth is looking less and less like a special place and more like there's Earth-like things everywhere," said Thomas Barclay, Kepler scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute in Sonoma, California. But don't get your hopes up! Unfortunately, you won't be visiting these planets anytime soon, if at all; the Kepler-62 star, in which Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f are orbiting, is 1,200 light years away. The Kepler-69 (the star that Kepler-69c is orbiting) is 2,700 light years away. And since a light year is almost 6 trillion miles, traveling to any of these planets would take... a loooong time.

Boston Marathon Suspects Identified!
Last night was an extremely eventful night for Boston. As you know, police were/are still hunting for suspects of who set off the bombs at the Boston Marathon. Right now, the main suspects are Russian brothers by the names of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, age 19 and his deceased brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26. The violence started late Thursday when there was a robbery of a 7/11 convenience store. A short amount of time later, a police officer was critically shot while sitting in his car. He later died. That night, while police were searching for who had done that terrible thing, the two suspects then hijacked a car at gunpoint in Cambridge. They released the driver a half hour later at a gas station. When the police had almost caught up to them, the occupants of the car threw explosives out the windows and shot at the officers. The officers fired back and wounded one of the men (Tamerlan Tsarnaev), who later died at Beth Israel Hospital. However, his brother escaped on foot and is nowhere to be found. The real question is, where is he now?

The explosion occurred around 8 p.m. and could be heard as far away as Waxahachie, a town located 45 miles north. It sent flames spiraling high into the evening sky and rained burning embers, shrapnel and debris down on frightened residents.

iS iT wINTER, sPRING, oR sUMMER?
Here, it's more like spring. We just had nice weather where it was sunny and warm. Sure, it was a little rainy, but that's normal. However, in Denver, Colorado, they're not having such nice weather. There were blizzards, drought, and a reported twister all within a 50 mile radius. And let's not even get started on the floods. Denver can count on a foot of snow coming their way. Just be thankful that it isn't like that here in Iowa City!

NO mOney, No Lunch
We take getting lunch at school for granted. I mean, it's not like we pay, right? Even if our parents don't pay, we still get a cheese sandwich. However, that isn't the case in all schools. Students at an Attleboro, Massachusetts middle school went hungry if they had a negative balance on their prepaid lunch card. Around 25 students left the cafeteria still hungry because they had not eaten lunch. Parents, students, and even the principal were shocked at this act of cruelty. However, the company providing those lunches claims that the school had not stated exactly what to do with that sort of situation, so they took matters into their own hands.
Moral of the story: make sure to pay your lunch money! You never know if the ICCSD is next!

wHAT'S kILLING THE bEES?
It's normal if 10% of bees are killed. Or even 30%. But what would you think if half of all bees were being killed?!
Until now, scientists and bee keepers had no idea what was wrong with the bees! Recently, however, they have found that the death of these bees was mainly caused by the Veroa blood-sucking mites. (shudder) The bees are now full of stress as well because of those mites. You may not think that bees have feelings, but how would you feel if your blood was viciously being sucked by mites?!
