Iowa's Unemployment Rate Drops To 4.9%
The Iowa Workforce Development says that the state's unemployment rate for March dropped slightly to 4.9 percent, but the number of people working in non-farm jobs has declined as well. Although the number of unemployed people dropped from 82,300 in February to 80,700, the non-farm employment figure also dropped by 5,500 workers. Columbus day or discovery day?
Some students in City High believe that Christopher Columbus gets too much credit and recognition. A City High student, Rachel Rinehart, is actually leading an attempt to petition the governor to rename October 14 Discovery Day instead of Columbus Day. Rinehart says that Columbus Day, a federal holiday, is not general enough. She believes that Discovery Day is a more accurate name if you look at history because of the people that discovered the Americas before Columbus. So far, Rinehart has gathered 700 signatures, and when she has enough, she’ll send the petition to Governor Terry Branstad and other local lawmakers. Do you agree with Rinehart?
